{"id":15329,"date":"2024-11-27T09:08:30","date_gmt":"2024-11-27T14:08:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.stratusadmissionscounseling.com\/blog\/?p=15329"},"modified":"2026-03-09T12:54:55","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T16:54:55","slug":"how-to-create-the-best-possible-resume-for-your-mba-application-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stratusadmissionscounseling.com\/blog\/how-to-create-the-best-possible-resume-for-your-mba-application-2\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Create the Best Possible Resume for Your MBA Application"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An excellent resume is an important part of your MBA application because it gives admissions committees (AdComs) a snapshot of your work experience, education, skills, and accomplishments. However, it is more than just an updated version of the resume you used to land your current job. Put in the time to make your resume exceptional! Here are some tips for creating a superb MBA application resume:<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>LENGTH: Cut it down to one page!<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AdComs read 10,000 applications in the span of just a few months. Be respectful of their time and the sheer number of applications they receive by providing a one-page detailed summary that is easy to read and to the point. (Note: Applicants to executive MBA programs who have ten or more years of experience can have resumes up to two pages.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tips for trimming your resume:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Complete sentences are not necessary, nor are words such as \u201ca,\u201d \u201can,\u201d and \u201cthe.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Periods at the end of a line are optional. Use periods or don\u2019t use them<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just be consistent throughout.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Font can go as small as 10 points, and your margins can shrink to 0.5 or even to 0.3 on all sides.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The white space\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sections can also shrink to be very tiny rather than taking the height of a full 10-point font character, and you can reduce the space between the bullet point and the first character of that line.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Numbers can be presented as numerals (\u201c4\u201d) rather than being spelled out (\u201cfour\u201d), and\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">widely used<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0abbreviations and acronyms are acceptable.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Formatting is a great way to reduce length without cutting into the meat of your resume.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use standard fonts such as Calibri, Times, and Arial (or Arial Narrow).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>STRUCTURE: Although the structure of an MBA resume is similar to that of a work resume, there are differences.<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remove the objective at the top of your resume because everyone has the same objective when applying to business schools<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to get in!<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dates are important on an MBA resume because schools expect continuous employment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a gap in employment, use the optional essay to share a sentence or two explaining how you utilized your time when not employed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dates should be easy for AdComs to find and follow. Line them up on the far-right side of the page, and include months and years for each entry.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>EXPERIENCE: What should I focus on?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your first bullet point underneath each job title should be the most significant. Remember that your audience is AdComs, and what is significant<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to them <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is leadership or interpersonal skills, analytical or problem-solving skills, and a show of career progression. AdComs are more interested in how a candidate managed a four-person cross-functional team than whether the candidate can code in 20 computer languages.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Quantify it!<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When possible, quantify your experience. Strong resumes include numerical items such as size and scope of work responsibilities, the number of people managed, the size of the budget, or perhaps the measurable impact of a project in cost savings or share\/revenue growth. Concrete numbers have a lot of power on a resume.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Be a S.T.A.R.<\/strong> One way to concisely convey your accomplishments is to use the S.T.A.R. method. This stands for\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>S<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ituation or context<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>T<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ask: What needed to be done or the key objective<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>A<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ction: Your role, the time frame (if applicable), and the skills used\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>R<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">esults: Quantified results, if possible (e.g., \u201cManaged 5 engineers to successfully design $200 million living quarters project for remote offshore platform 2 months ahead of schedule.\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Highlight your strengths without pointing out your weaknesses.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you earned honors in undergrad\/grad school, list them! This is always an asset.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your GMAT score, if\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an asset<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, should appear on your resume in the section where you list your university degree(s).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, your grade point average, if\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an asset<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, should also be listed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These data points are in the online portion of your application, so simply leave them off if they are average or below!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Consider your resume content with respect to your essays.<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This might seem a bit counterintuitive, but if you are going to write a significant amount in your essay(s) about an experience at a particular job, then you can include\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0about that experience on your resume. Rather than including four bullet points describing that position, you might only have two because the content of those bullets is more thoroughly discussed in the essays. This will free up some space to add unique content in other areas of your resume.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>INTERESTS: Business schools look at their applicants in a holistic way.<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Include a section that briefly covers your interests outside of work. In a blind MBA admissions interview, your interests are frequently conversation starters!<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you spend time volunteering? If so, what is your role, and with which organization do you volunteer?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you play sports on a regular basis? If so, list them!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you speak foreign languages? List your level of proficiency in each (and make sure to include English in your list!).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make your interests sound interesting! Instead of including \u201ccooking,\u201d write something like \u201ccooking spicy Southeast Asian foods.\u201d Specific details are more interesting.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>LANGUAGE: How can I convey my experiences clearly?<\/h4>\n<p><b> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember that you\u2019re not applying for a master\u2019s in English, so don\u2019t worry about the style as much as the substance. You want to clearly communicate your experiences in the fewest words possible to make space for as much as you can on your resume.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Do not use jargon. <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AdCom members do not necessarily have experience in your field and are unlikely to understand industry-specific acronyms and jargon.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Convert all of this type of wording to more universally understood business language.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid hedging words such as \u201cmay\u201d and \u201cmight,\u201d that which could make you sound unsure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not use contractions to save space even though it is very tempting to do so.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Use action-oriented wording. <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as with a work resume, you want to use diverse wording that describes you as an active person.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start each bullet point with a strong active verb, and do not overuse a particular word.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pay attention to leadership\/teamwork themes when selecting your wording for an MBA application (e.g., \u201ccollaborated,\u201d \u201cestablished,\u201d \u201cinitiated,\u201d \u201cspearheaded,\u201d \u201csteered\u201d).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Tell the truth, but don\u2019t provide TMI. <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It goes without saying that you should not lie on your resume. Most schools do a background check on applicants, and if caught lying, you will be in violation of the honor code and your acceptance or degree will be revoked. That pointer is probably obvious to everyone, but what about the smaller things?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not put a photo on your resume. Leave out personal details such as age and marital status.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not include information pertaining to high school, high school jobs, or high school\/college entry tests, such as the SAT.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>PROOFREAD: Most importantly, proofread, proofread, and then proofread again!<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pay attention to capitalization, which many people\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overuse<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0on resumes.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capitalize specific job titles such as &#8220;Associate Brand Manager,&#8221; team titles, brand names, and company names.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colleges and college majors should be capitalized, as they are proper nouns.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first word of every bullet and sub-bullet should be capitalized.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hobbies, skills, industry sectors, and general job titles should not be capitalized.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the above recommendations will set you well on your way to crafting a strong and authentic resume for your MBA applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applying to an MBA program and need help with your resume? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stratusadmissionscounseling.com\/free-consultation\/\"><b>Get in touch<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Stratus, and we will help you increase your chances of being accepted!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An excellent resume is an important part of your MBA application because it gives admissions committees (AdComs) a snapshot of your work experience, education, skills, and accomplishments.
