{"id":16749,"date":"2026-04-28T12:44:26","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T16:44:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.stratusadmissionscounseling.com\/blog\/?p=16749"},"modified":"2026-04-28T12:44:27","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T16:44:27","slug":"future-business-leaders-listen-to-these-podcasts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stratusadmissionscounseling.com\/blog\/future-business-leaders-listen-to-these-podcasts\/","title":{"rendered":"Future Business Leaders: Listen to These Podcasts!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Perhaps the very best podcast I have listened to that offers insight for future business leaders is an<strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/hbr-ideacast\/id152022135?i=1000596327128\"><strong><em>HBR IdeaCast<\/em><\/strong><strong>&nbsp;episode with Guy Raz<\/strong><\/a>. In this episode, Raz discusses the three qualities that hundreds of business founders and leaders of successful organizations have in common: they create a culture of collaboration, encourage risk taking, and allow for failure. Interestingly, top MBA programs share these qualities as well! Business schools bring together students with diverse personal and professional experiences. A well-crafted MBA classroom and a supportive community enable students to spark conversations and present radical ideas in a safe space where nobody is at risk of losing their job. While some MBA programs may be viewed as competitive, others emphasize collaboration and the sharing of ideas to create win\/win situations for their students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whenever I listen to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/series\/490248027\/how-i-built-this\"><strong>Guy Raz\u2019s&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><em>How I Built This<\/em><\/strong><strong>&nbsp;podcast<\/strong><\/a>, I come away with at least one nugget that will improve my leadership. Often, it comes from hearing a founder in a space that I am unfamiliar with share their journey to success. Although my background is in consulting, technology, and education, I find inspiration in the insights shared by founders of food and clothing companies\u2014usually those who stumbled upon an idea by simply paying attention to what customers wanted, such as Stacy Madison of Stacy\u2019s Pita Chips. You don\u2019t have to have entrepreneurial aspirations to glean value from this podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After listening to dozens of&nbsp;<em>How I Built This<\/em>&nbsp;episodes, I was left wanting more and discovered&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/luminary.link\/smeDZ8GCvfb\"><strong>Guy Raz\u2019s&nbsp;<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/try.luminarypodcasts.com\/listen\/wisdom-from-the-top\/65280dac52b38a00118a0cb7\"><strong><em>Wisdom From The Top<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. The unpredictable and diverse journeys of the leaders of major global corporations are inspiring, giving talented young professionals a glimpse of the variety of paths one might take on the road to the C-suite. Takeaways include being vulnerable, asking the right questions, listening to understand, and taking risks. These lessons can be applied at any stage in your career\u2014and even in your personal life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the newest addition to Guy Raz\u2019s <em>How I Built This<\/em> podcast franchise is the Advice Line. In these episodes, Guy Raz brings in successful entrepreneurs such as serial entrepreneur <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/advice-line-with-serial-entrepreneur-mark-cuban\/id1150510297?i=1000746104041\"><strong>Mark Cuban<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/advice-line-with-eric-ryan-of-method-returns\/id1150510297?i=1000761649452\"><strong>Eric Ryan<\/strong><\/a> of Method, and <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/advice-line-with-julia-hartz-of-eventbrite\/id1150510297?i=1000748229762\"><strong>Julia Hartz<\/strong><\/a> of Eventbrite to share their expertise with call-in founders who have questions about growing their businesses. As these experts chat with early-stage founders, I find myself wanting to jump into the conversation and make suggestions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly, communicating effectively is instrumental to being an outstanding leader. Another favorite podcast is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsb.stanford.edu\/business-podcasts\/think-fast-talk-smart-podcast\"><strong><em>Think Fast, Talk Smart<\/em><\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;with Matt Abrahams from Stanford GSB. Each week, Matt and his guests\u2014many of whom are business school professors\u2014share insights on how communication can allow you to build trust, motivate others, negotiate, and more! I find myself leaning into these tips and techniques when working with clients to uncover and craft their narratives for business school applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might also check out Matt\u2019s collaboration with LinkedIn, including the \u201cCatalyzing Your Career\u201d miniseries. One guest was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dorieclark.com\/\"><strong>Dorie Clark<\/strong><\/a>, whom&nbsp;<em>The New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;called \u201can expert at self-reinvention and helping others make changes in their lives.\u201d In the episode, Dorie discussed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/187-experimenting-failing-and-finding-your-job-fit\/id1494989268?i=1000694369810\"><strong>Experimenting, Failing, and Finding Your Job Fit<\/strong><\/a>\u201d and shared fantastic nuggets on how to use AI as you explore potential careers. In 2024, Matt hosted&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/amycedmondson.com\/\"><strong>Amy Edmondson<\/strong><\/a>, a Harvard Business School (HBS) professor whose teaching focuses on psychological safety and failing well at work. She speaks about the importance of situational awareness and creating a culture where failure is accepted and asking questions is encouraged. In 2023, Matt and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kimmalonescott.com\/\"><strong>Kim Scott<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;discussed Scott\u2019s book,&nbsp;<em>Radical Candor<\/em>, specifically the value of leaders demonstrating that they care personally while simultaneously challenging their employees directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to get really focused on leadership or strategy,&nbsp;<em>Harvard Business Review<\/em>&nbsp;has created&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2023\/05\/podcast-hbr-on-leadership\"><strong><em>HBR On Leadership<\/em><\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2023\/05\/podcast-hbr-on-strategy\"><strong><em>HBR&nbsp;On Strategy<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, which hand-curate episodes from all of the publication\u2019s podcasts. These are binge-worthy podcasts if you want a lot of insights on either leadership or strategy from a variety of perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would be remiss if I didn\u2019t give a shout-out to Wharton professor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/adamgrant.net\/\"><strong>Adam Grant<\/strong><\/a>, whose&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/adamgrant.net\/podcasts\/rethinking\/\"><strong><em>Re:Thinking<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>podcast explores how we challenge ourselves and each other to think differently. One of my favorite episodes was the one when he went head to head with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/podcast\/taken-for-granted-malcolm-gladwell-questions-everything\/id1346314086?i=1000512196905\"><strong>Malcolm Gladwell<\/strong><\/a>. Or check out his conversations with soccer superstars&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/soccer-star-abby-wambach-on-being-good-enough\/id1346314086?i=1000597936153\"><strong>Abby Wambach<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/david-beckham-on-thriving-under-pressure-and-learning\/id1554567118?i=1000758348571\"><strong>David Beckham<\/strong><\/a>. Who doesn\u2019t love the leadership lessons you can take away from world-class athletes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My children often roll their eyes when I begin a sentence with \u201cI was listening to this great podcast\u2026\u201d However, the young professionals I support are grateful to receive an email from me with a link to a nugget of insight or wisdom that relates to their background, interests, motivations, or aspirations. Whether you listen to podcasts on your way to the gym, during your commute, while getting in your daily step count, or while making dinner, take time to listen.
